My ABCs of Travel

So I've seen these ABC posts floating around for awhile now and I thought I should put one together of my own! Living in England has brought so many new experiences into my life and I am just so happy to actually have some interesting stories to tell!

Age you went on your first international trip | 21, Cancun on our Honeymoon (almost 10 years ago!!)....just a baby! And check out those shades....talk about a #tbt!!

Best Foreign Beer and Where | Hands down, Kozel Dark, first tasted at Lokal, in Prague. I’m not a dark beer drinker per se, but this beer is so light and yummy, even though it is dark! And my runner up, Zywiec Porter...Polish dark beer! Who knew I would fall in love with Eastern European beer?!

Cuisine: Favorite | Greek food was absolutely incredible. Light, refreshing and healthy. Lots of olives, olive oil, tomatoes, cucumbers, feta cheese, seafood….basically everything I love. I had THE best salads of my life in Greece. And lets not forget, you always have an amazing view while eating! This is making me really hungry recounting my meals. Oh I have to go back one day!

Destinations: Favorite and least favorite | This is really a tough choice here for my favorite. I am going to have say it's a tie between Prague and Greece. And I just can't choose a least favorite. While every destination isn't a dream, each is a learning experience!

Event that made you say wow | Watching the sunset in Santorini. I mean, it was like I was in a dream every night when we watched the sun set. Truly incredible.

Favorite mode of transportation | Car. Duh. I'm American.

Greatest feeling while traveling | The first steps in a new country are always filled with excitement. I love the moment when I round a corner and see a town square or a landmark that I have been dreaming of laying my eyes on. And then boom, there it is, right in front of me. It's a feeling I will NEVER tire of!

Hottest place | White Sands, NM

Incredible service: I'm gonna have to go with Greece again on this one! While we didn't stay at the fanciest of places in Mykonos and Santorini, our hotels had the most genuine of staff. Super friendly, super helpful and just made our stays incredibly happy. (Review of our Santorini hotel here)

Journey that took the longest | Surprise! It's not a flight to England (although that is the longest in distance). But moving back to Atlanta from Clovis, NM was the longest journey. 1250 miles, with a Uhaul and 3 pets!! Talk about a journey!

Keepsake from your travels | Van and I like to find ‘free’ keepsakes sometimes. We've collected rocks from the Cliffs of Dover, the shores of Nice, Red Beach in Santorini and shells from Mykonos. But my latest fun purchase was a Hard Rock shirt from Prague. I used to be obsessed with Hard Rock shirts as a kid, so it was fun to get one from my favorite place!

Let down sight | I'm not saying this was a let down but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. And that's Red Beach in Santorini.

Moment when you fell in love with travel | I have always had a wanderlusting soul!

Nicest hotel you have stayed at | I think I have to go with the Intercontinental Mar Menor in Spain. It was just a gorgeous resort and I would go back in a heartbeat.

Obsession, what do you photograph | Stairs. Van is always saying 'ok, here's your stairs, hurry up and get a picture'. He just doesn't get aesthetics :)

Passport stamps, how many and where | Right now, 39 including United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Spain and Poland….hoping to have 40+ by the time we leave England!

Quirkiest Attraction | I don't know about 'quirky' but weirdest would be the Trinity bomb testing site in New Mexico. It was where the first nuclear bomb was tested. Definitely strange.

Really Frightening. A place unsafe or uneasy | I've never felt truly scared in our travels, but I have to say, some areas of Paris at night were not the best. I would say I felt uneasy, but never frightened!

Splurge | This year, we booked a 5 Star Hotel in Prague for Valentines (which I have yet to blog on) and it was fantastic. Complete with massages and rooftop champs sipping in a hot tub! Totally worth the splurge!

Touristy things you’ve done | This may not be 'touristy' but Van and I have been creating a collection. A collection of  'Van's World Traveller' poses. You know how you see pictures of people looking really pensive and deep in thought in some foreign location. Yeah, well this is a parody of those people and I can't wait to share them with you once it's complete. It's freaking hilarious! We just don't take ourselves too seriously. See if you can find a sample photo that I previously shared on our trip to Bath.

Unforgettable travel memory | Auschwitz. I will blog on this soon, but I can't shake the feelings that I felt while visiting Auschwitz. It will stick with me forever.

Visas how many and where | Just two! And both for England

Wine best while travelling | Ok, I love wine anywhere so this is a dumb question for me! Spain and Italy both had some amazing wines. Greece did as well. But what was totally unexpected was some local wine from Prague!

Excellent view and from where | Loved this rooftop bar in Prague. It was my favorite place to get a birdseye view!

Years spent travelling | I'm gonna go with 31 on this one!

Zealous sports fans and where | I'm choosing ourselves...we are cheering our team on wherever we go!! War Damn Eagle! We bleed orange and blue. Auburn lovers forever!

( circa 2010)

Ok whoa. Thanks for sticking around if you've made it this far! It's so much fun to reminisce on travels past! Do you reminisce 24/7 like I do?

Linking up with Treat Yoself Thursday :)

  10. Love this! I have been wanting to do it for a while, too! Such a fun recollection of your experiences. I had to laugh below where you said Texas takes forever. As a kid living in Texas and going on road trips to other states, we were always SO EXCITED when we finally got out of Texas! Haha.

And also I love that you collect rocks haha my dad does that to my mother's despair..there are rocks everywhere, which my dad says are all unique and my mom says all look the same...and I just realised that I'm dating a guy who loves to collect rocks too ...oh boy I see my future ;)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh that's funny!! I think the rocks are cool when you can tell where they are from...like Red Beach and Dover Cliffs Buuutt....I think I'm done on the rock front now haha!

  27. I returned from 2.5 months in Europe in January and just found your blog. I love it, it's like a trip down memory lane! I see Berlin is on your wishlist...if/when you make it there you have to go to Maria Bonita, seriously it's the BEST Mexican food I've ever had (even better than here in Atlanta or the States)! Also, go to The Bird...best burger of my life (I went Shroom & Swiss)! And just so you don't think I ate only "American type food" lol, the best döner I had was at Hasir Ocakbaşi in Kreuzberg neighborhood. Thanks for the great memories you brought back while reading about London, Rome, Prague, Paris :-) Oh, and you totally should hit Lisbon and definitely add Barcelona (& Madrid) to your wishlist!

  28. Hey Logan! Glad you are enjoying the posts!! I don't know if we will make it back to Germany or Spain before we leave but I know we will be back one day! And funny enough, we had some amazing Mexican in Prague....and even ran into the head chef (from Mexico City) later on that night! I always seek out the best Mexican....what's your favorite in Atlanta? We will be moving back soon and I haven't lived there for almost 10 years!!
