Lately...

We are back safe and sound from a weekend getaway to the beautiful Rome! Before I get into all that is the Eternal City I wanted to write up a little post on what's been going on lately in the Gunter household. It's a little lengthy but its been a good while since I've written a Lately post!

Ely Christmas Fair

Last week, we attended the Ely Christmas Fair preview. We wanted to see what it was all about and the preview was the perfect idea since we would be missing the weekend fair while in Rome. Set in the Ely Cathedral, it was incredibly magical! As if the Cathedral couldn't be any more magical. We shopped the stalls, which filled the massive Cathedral to the brim, while sipping mulled wine and munching on mince meat pies. Perfection! We scooped up a couple gifts and thus started the Christmas season. Christmas begins waaaayy earlier here than in the States because there is no Thanksgiving holiday here to act as a buffer. And I quite like it!

If you haven't seen my Ely Cathedral posts or my many Instagram shots, check these out: Interior, Tower and Exterior. She's a beaut!

RyanAir flights
While I am getting better at flying and keeping my nerves under control, I still get vertigo every now and again on takeoff. And if I don't, sometimes I just feel like I am going to faint because my nerves are going berserk. But I have to say, on our last two trips flying with RyanAir (Prague and Rome), I have been impressed with how smooth the flights have been. Well except for the huge bounce on arriving in Rome.....haha! We bounced pretty high and landed hard but we made it safely! I always judge the pilot when he comes over the loud speaker and I have to say, RyanAir pilots do a good job of sounding cheery and giving us an itinerary of the flight path which I thoroughly enjoy!

Crossing the Alps
And speaking of flying, the last two flights took us over the Alps which is the most amazing thing to fly over on a clear day. They are a truly incredible sight from the sky and I can't wait to get back to the slopes this winter season! We are counting down the days!

Inexcusable Neighbor Behavior (the lengthy part)
I love that I have a blog and can vent about this. This part might even deserve it's own post! I have a crazy stalker neighbor and I secretly hope she reads this! Here's the deal. We used to board our dogs every time we travelled but we have some friends who live here in Ely who said they would love to come and watch them at the house if we wanted them too. So for awhile now, my sweet friends Catherine, Jacob and Luke have been coming and feeding and walking them while we are gone which allows the dogs to stay in the comfort of their own home. And usually they just stay over at our house. Which makes me so happy when I come home from a trip and they are just as happy as can be and not exhausted and stressed from the kennel!  They basically live in the heated conservatory and have access to the garden during the day. Sounds pretty normal right?

Well, we left Friday morning for Rome and not long after we were gone the Dog Warden was called to our house to check the welfare of our dogs. Are you kidding me? I still have yet to figure out why she would do this. My dogs are my family and basically my kids and I would never ever put them in harms way! Obviously, I brought them all this way to England. It's so insulting. And why didn't she call me first?

But I'm telling you, this lady watches us like a hawk. It's weird. She's a 'curtain twitcher'. This isn't the first time she has done something either. She's always complaining about our garden.....like she comes by to tell us our bush is a couple inches too long. I'm not kidding. Or she complains that we have a few weeds in OUR driveway. She complains about our motion sensor light. She complains about my garden trees growing into another neighbors garden. I'm almost positive she is the reason we have a house inspection every 3 months. (She is friends with our landlord and has probably made them think that we are terrible). Every time they come to do the inspection, the guy is like 'why am I here, your house is in perfect order?' She complains that I have my groceries delivered. Don't I have a right to have that service? She complains about our neighbor's yard and cuts it herself if she doesn't like it....what?! And she brings my trash bin in if I don't have it pulled in by her time standards. It's out of control. Why. Oh, and she isn't even our nexr door neighbor....she lives across the street!!

I boiled over the Dog Warden thing while in Rome and the closer we got to home the angrier I got. Why can't she just leave us alone? The Dog Warden says it was an anonymous call (although it could only be her) stating that we leave our dogs unattended every weekend and they cry and howl (my dogs do neither). This particular weekend we were have said to have left Thursday to Sunday. Ok, wrong on all levels. Furious doesn't even begin to describe what I feel. And I love how we are said to have been gone the weeknd prior as well.... I had to look at pictures from my phone to see what we were doing. Maybe I should show her pictures of the dogs up on the sofa with us having the laziest weekend of all time! Out of town...pfff.

The only thing I could think that would have made her call is if Bruno was barking. Bruno barks at things but he isn't a yapper. He barks to scare off a threat and then he's done when he feels the threat is gone. Mostly at loud moving trucks or if someone pulls into our driveway. He is a Boxer and is protective of us but incredibly loving....simple as that. (Willis on the other hand would sleep through burglars, fires and any other emergencies...English Bulldog for ya). But still, even if Bruno barked, is that reason to call the Dog Warden? She knew we had left for a trip and that's why she did it. She is freaking crazy. And she is the only thing that I dislike about England. I can't wait until this weekend....I might just have to throw a massive, loud party for my birthday. HA!

I am working up the courage and calm to go over and talk to her today without getting upset. What would you do?

Ok, enough about the crazy lady. Rome was amazing and I have lots of goodies coming up soon on the blog. It was a destination where the tears of joy flowed! Stay tuned :)

  1. Ah I don't blame you I would be ranting away with a neighbor like that! Hope she backs off! And I can't wait to read more about Rome, I love that city :)

  2. Ugh...it's just constant with her. Why can't she just leave us be? I don't get it. BUT Rome was amazing....we needed more time there for sure!

  3. Uuugh that is so annoying!! I definitely think you should go speak to her. Ask her point-blank what her problems are and then when she's done you can explain to her the points that she has wrong and, moreover, the points that are none of her business! Easier said that done of course but at least then you will have called her out on it and she won't be able to pat herself on the back anymore for reporting her bad neighbours to the landlord/dog warden. What a nasty piece of work!

  4. Smooth flights with Ryanair, a rare and fortunate find ;).
Woah. Your neighbour is absolutely ridiculous. You need to go over and speak to her, go and do it now whilst you are angry about it! Women like this usually need to be told what for, because they are like this as people let them get away with it! Nosy old cow! I can not STAND people like this. I am so sorry you've had to go through all of this drama.

  5. Yeah...I think I may wait for Van to come home because he is good about saying things that are effective whereas I will just go off the hook with why she is crazy haha!! She is nasty...and has nothing better to do with her time!

  6. Seriously...I've been doing better with Ryainair over EasyJet lately for some reason! Ugh, this lady. I just want to smack her....which is why I should probably wait for my husband to go talk to her with me. Haha!! She has been nothing but drama from day one and I have been sweet and gone along with it all. But now....it's on!

  7. Wow! There always has to be one, right? Ugh. So what did the dog warden say? Do you know if this lady does this for everyone? I would actually attempt to get her back some how, not in a damaging way, but like leave her anonymous notes somehow.

  8. Can't wait to hear more about your trip to Rome!!

Your neighbour sounds nuts, I hope you keep us updated on how the confrontation goes. She needs to be told off!

  9. The dog warden just said that she had to follow up on all complaints and she believed what I was saying. I told her that it was bold faced lie to say we were out of town the weekend prior....we never left the house! She asked me about the dogs and it was obvious from what I was telling her that we are obsessed with our dogs and we would never put them in harms way!! And oh believe me, we are scheming haha!!

  10. I will definitely give an update! Hopefully a good one :)

  11. Oh wow it must indeed be amazing to fly over the alps! I hope I get to do that soon! :) And that neighbour sounds SO weird! Nosy neighbours are the worst and seriously are stepping over the limit - it's not because you live next to someone that you should feel compelled to get involved in their life! Gosh I hope that gets better - and I learned from personal experience that you should write all inappropriate behaviour from your neighbour in case, one day when they cross the line, you have all the other instances to back it up.

  12. Oh My! What a very annoying neighbor. I think you should totally talk to her. What did the dog warden say? Did they call you? I vote for the loud birthday party!

I can't wait to hear about Rome. I may be going in the near future so any tips you have would be great!

  13. Don't know what to say about that neighbor of yours... But at least your friends who check on your dogs can attest to the fact that you make your fur-babies a priority. Flying over the Alps...wow. I really want to visit them, but visiting elsewhere and seeing them from above sounds breathtaking. Can't wait to hear about Rome!

  14. What a psycho neighbor!!! I'm anxiously waiting for a Part 2 to the story. What did the Dog Warden say? Were they on your side or did they reprimand you? Hopefully everything worked out!!! xo

  15. Jamie, ( Fabulous Blog, by the way! )

A “Heads-Up” for BBC2 at 9.00 p.m. “Secrets of the Castle” A new 5 part Series starts this evening, which is about medieval castles and how they were built. The series also joins a 25 year project in France where a castle is under construction, built using 13th century tools and techniques. Other than Downton, you don’t comment on British TV, so I do not know if you bother to watch it. However, I though you might have an interest in this series. You can always watch it on BBC iPlayer, if you miss it tonight.

I know that you have summarised the perceived problems you appear to have with your not-so-near neighbour. Is she well known for complaining about her neighbours, near and far, or do you think you have been singled out for her special venial attention. If so, it might be more prudent to choose your moment of confrontation than crossing swords this evening. Know your enemy, as they say!

As for your 3 month house inspections, these might have simply been put in place by your landlord after he was aware that your dogs had joined you. Bearing in mind your dogs are more likely to damage a rented property, through chewing and scratching than you are! All you have to do is ask why he thinks it necessary to now do 3 month checks, if this was not case when you moved in. If he reveals your neighbour had involved herself in his decision, that's just more ammunition for you

  16. Evil, evil lady. That's the thing that sucks about living amongst retirees...excuse moi, 'pensioners' (trust me, I know!). There are many of them who have nothing better to do with their time than snoop, micromanage and annoy the crap out of everyone else. Spoken from true, frustrating experience my friend. I've had many issues with my old fogie neighbor!

You just have to look at it this way, how sad a life she must have to have nothing better to do than pick on kind people like you. Go on being you, and awesome.

    Much love

  17. I just don't understand why some people have to act like this....it just boggles my mind! Telling bold faced lies to get someone in trouble is beyond absurd!

    ReplyDelete
  18. I called the dog warden and she told me the allegations and I disputed them and she believed me after I explained the type of neighbor that I had. And of course with my American accent and my explanation, she knows that I spent loads of $$ to get them over here and I obviously care about my dogs! Of course it was an anonymous caller, but when I told her who I thought it was she didn't dispute it and acted as though I was right! So, I'm in the clear.....just seriously ridiculous!

And Rome was great! I would suggest 3 nights to get everything in! How soon are you going? I should have everything posted by December!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ugh....the neighbor. I guess there is one in every British neighborhood. It just bothers me that she told lies to try and get me in trouble! Rome is coming soon, I just have to get through getting all of these photos together!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. The dog warden was very cool when I called her. She told me the allegations, which I told her were absolute lies from a neighbor that has it out for us. And she believed me and was fine with it! She said that she would just call me and come meet the puppies if she gets another call. But once she realized I'm American, and realized I must really love my little boys to pay to get them over here, she realized that the complaint had to have been completely false. So, we're good!! I guess we will just have to see what happens next time we go out of town!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh I absolutely have an interest in that series you mentioned! I will have to watch it on the player! Thanks for the suggestion! And as far as the neighbor goes, we are definitely watching what we say and how we react. Maybe no reaction will bother her even more haha!! I think she is the resident complainer for our section of the neighborhood and she has even complained to me about other neighbors before so I know this is just who she is. But I just find it odd that we have had 5 inspections within a year and nothing has changed to the property...we are the type (being landlords ourselves) that we would immediately call if we damaged something and would have it repaired! Either way, I guess the inspections aren't to big of an issue but the letting agency were surprised at the frequency of inspections themselves!

Again, thanks for the TV suggestions! We love the castles and are always looking for good historical shows!!

  22. What really was funny to me was after we moved in, she came to talk to me at home one day and drilled me about what I do all day since I didn't work (and this is after she tells me she obviously doesn't work and doesn't drive either). She said, well since you don't work...what DO you do all day? Like I must just lay around all day. Rude. I was polite and did not through it back in her face and drill her about what she does all day. But geesh, come on lady, get a life!!!

  23. Jamie,

Just an update to yesterday’s post. As you obviously missed the Tuesday start of the new 5 part series on BBC2 last night on how medieval castles were built. I have checked further and each episode will be repeated on the following Sunday at 7.00 p.m. I found it very interesting and I am sure you will as well.

In your kind response to my post, for which I thank you very much. You indicated that you like good historical shows.
In that case, on BBC iPlayer search for: Gunpowder 5/11: The Greatest Terror Plot.
It is still available to view instantly, or to download to view later, for the next 17 days)

This is a really excellent Drama Documentary, revealing the inner secrets of the famous Gunpowder Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. Its narrative uses the words of the plotter themselves, based on the interrogations of two of the conspirators, Thomas Wintour and the infamous Guy Fawkes.

I am sure you will find it interesting. I hope so, as I may be testing you later! Lol.

  24. My blood started boiling for you while I was reading this! Probably because I've had similar problems with meddling neighbors. I am not the most neighborly person, so I'd be perfectly happy if everyone living near me always kept to themselves. :) I think you should go talk to her. Keep your voice even and stay calm, no matter what, but say what you're feeling. I mean, what's your only other option? Being miserable for the remaining time you're living there? I feel for you!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I just don't understand it!! She just has nothing better to do. It really was just insulting that she would tell bold faced lies to the dog warden though. I couldn't believe it! I think I am going to sit on my feelings before I talk to her. I'm too upset still! But I won't be miserable for my remaining time.....and now the dog warden is on my side so I don't really know what else she can do now haha!!

  26. ahh that is so annoying about the neighbor! some people just have nothing better to do with their lives!

  27. She's looney and unhappy....just so irritating and insulting!

  28. Thank you so much for the suggestions! I watched the first episode on the medieval castles and it was very interesting. I can't wait for the upcoming episodes :)

  29. Reading about RyanAir takes me back to when we lived in Europe. Loved getting cheap flights on them (and EasyJet) and taking off someplace for a long weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I want to go to a European Christmas market so bad! They look so festive! Oh and love how cheap RyanAir is! Took one flight from Newcastle to Dublin and had to plan our entire European trip based on their luggage requirements!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love Rome! One of my favorite cities in Europe. Good luck with crazy lady. We had a guy like that once, who would call the cops on my dog all the time. We finally made him a chocolate pie and had pie and discussed our differences, he was better after that. He said he just waned to be listened to. www.eatallovertheworld.weebly.com

  32. Oh I just love it! I don't mind giving up the frills of a regular airline to have these amazing prices!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Haha I know....I always despise paying the extra for luggage but I do appreciate RyanAir's allowance for two cabin bags. EasyJet made me cram my purse into my backpack on a flight before....It was so silly! We are headed to Germany for s few Christmas markets so stay tuned :)

  34. That's so sweet that you worked things out with him. We asked our lady if it was her who make the call and she lied and said no but she was so obvious about it.....most awkward conversation ever!
