Experience of a Lifetime | Downton Abbey Tour

When Van first heard that England would be a job option in the following year, the British show Downton Abbey was just beginning to become a hit TV show in the UK and US. It was in January 2013 that I found my love for the show. I came down with a terrible flu after the Christmas holidays and found the series on Netflix. I started Season 1 and was surprised that I wasn't getting into the show. But I pressed on and after Episode 3, I was HOOKED!! I finished Season 1 and 2 while I was sick just in time for the premiere of Season 3 on PBS.

Watching Downton Abbey in the States made me super excited about moving to the UK. During all of my hours of scouring the internet about things to do in the UK, I discovered that Downton Abbey was actually Highclere Castle. I went to their website and found that they opened the castle at certain times of the year for visitors to tour. I made a mental note!

After being in the UK for just a few days, I got on the Highclere Castle website and completely lucked out. The tickets were on sale that day and I was able to buy 2. They sold out within a few hours! The date I chose was December 7th. I had to wait 2 months....ugh! So I have been patiently awaiting for this trip. Luckily Season 4 was airing during this time and my excitement just continued to build. To my American friends, I am so sorry that Season 4 has not aired yet...it is coming next month I believe. I could go on and on about Season 4 but I won't for your sake :)

December 7th came.....

Unfortunately, there was no photography allowed inside the castle. But let me tell you, it was a Downton Abbey fan's dream. I literally kept reaching for my camera every five seconds. The first room was the library where a lot of the scenes are shot. The books, the red sofas, Lord Grantham's desk, its all there. The sitting rooms, the bedrooms, all just like you see in the show. My absolute favorite part of the castle...the grand staircase. I felt like Lady Mary walking down those stairs. It gave me chills!!

Van in his Auburn Gus Bus tee. It was SEC Championship day after all....and we won....and we are going to the National Championship..woohoo!!!

Can't you just see Lady Mary sitting here?

A few shots from the surrounding gardens....which were just downright lovely.

Are you humming the theme song yet????

What an amazing day at Highclere Castle. Definitely a trip that will be brought to mind every time I watch an episode. If you are a fan, this trip is a MUST!! But hurry, tickets sell out very quickly :)

  4. I've never started Downton Abbey (although so many people tell me I should), but these photos are AMAZING. Maybe I should binge watch the show before heading to the UK this year :)

  7. This made me smile, being a Brit in Canada I am often quizzed about whether "the house in Downtown Abbey" is a real place! It is certainly a beautiful building :-)

  12. Thank you so much for suggesting I read this. I don't know if it's because I just finished watching the newest episode or what, but this blew my mind! I am so happy for you that you could have this experience-- wow!! I definitely did get chills. So there's a waiting list for visiting? 13. Amazing right? Just go to the website for Highclere Castle and it should state when they are opening the castle to the public. They only do this during certain times. I want to say tickets were somewhere between 10-18gbp when we went. You have to go if they are open when you visit!!! And also, I heard that the castle is actually now for sale....for a cool 400million quid!
